“It’s not going to happen again,” Law, 36, of Commerce Township, promised Monday.

Police stopped the freshman Republican lawmaker and former Oakland County assistant prosecutor about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday on Woodward near 12 Mile Road. Law, headed north, was weaving between lanes in his 2003 Jeep Cherokee and driving about 10 m.p.h. faster than the speed limit, Berkley Deputy Chief Robert North said.

According to the police report, Law’s blood-alcohol level was 0.13%, nearly twice the 0.08% limit set by law for drunken-driving convictions in Michigan. He was arraigned Wednesday and released on a $500 bond. Law released a written statement, pledging that the charge, a first offense, would not interfere with his responsibilities as a legislator.

He said he would not fight the charge in 45A District Court in Berkley, where he is expected to face a judge in August. A member of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Law said he “used poor judgment.” He acknowledged that he drank beer with his friends at the All-Star Game at Comerica Park in Detroit and got in his car to go home.

If convicted, Law could face up to 93 days in jail. He also could have his driving privileges restricted. He said a conviction would not affect his sponsorship of a bill that cracks down on drunken driving, by allowing preliminary breath tests to be used in criminal cases.
